NOTE: The very large genus
Psocus
Latreille was redefined in a narrower sense by Pearman (1932a: 203) and later (1934b) the same author erected the genus
Psocidus
(with
Psocidus zanzibarensis
Pearman as type species) for the large number of species which had been described in
Psocus
but which were outside its scope in his restricted sense and which could also not be placed in other defined genera. Roesler (1944) placed the monotypic genera
Sigmatina
Enderlein and
Clistopsocus
Navas as subgenera of
Psocidus
. This resulted in a situation in which there were established three subgenera,
Sigmatina
,
Clistopsocus
and
Psocidus
s. str. which, in a formal sense, each included only its type species. The many remaining species (about 125) were listed as being in the genus
Psocidus
s. l. by Smithers (1967a), none of them having been formally shown to be congeneric with
P
.
zanzibarensis
. Study of these will undoubtedly result in the establishment of some new genera. It is also probable that several species described in
Psocus
after its redefinition by Pearman (1934b) are incorrectly placed and will also need new genera. Thornton (1960) described two new species from Hong Kong,
Psocidus validus
and
Psocidus strictus
stating that they were congeneric with the type species and including them in
Psocidus
s. str., considering all other species to belong to
Psocidus
s. l. New (1975e, 1978f), Badonnel (1977e), Thornton (1984b) and Mockford (1996a) have similarly added eight species to
Psocidus
s. str.
